Travel Journal: Iceland Roadtrip

DAY 6

Day 6

Akureyri > Húsafell

Today was all about exploring the western side of the country (not the Westfjords area) on our way to Husafel area. The drive through West was jaw dropping beautiful! Remember Walter Mitty’s downhill longboarding scene? That’s how the view looks like. We were in awe the whole time and we’ve been snapping pictures and stop by the road throughout the journey. Along the way we stopped at Glaumbær Museum, Borgarfjörður, Deildartunguhver Thermal Spring and to our last stop, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss Waterfall.

When we arrived at the parking area of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss Watertalls, we make a quick lunch which was instant noodle. Once we done, we walked towards the watertalls, following the trails. Hraunfossar means “lava falls” because the water surfaces from underneath the Grahraun Lava Field. The waterfall consists of countless springs of clear water that emerge from under the edge of the lava field and flow into the Hvítá river. It’s quite unique and beautiful. Looking at the water runs through the lava and fall into the river really amazed me and makes me just stood there and admire the beauty! The other waterfall, Barnafoss, is above a walking bridge and takes its name from a tragic story where two boys fell of a bridge and died in this waterfall. We went back onto main road towards Húsafell and went to our next campsite.
