Travel Journal: Iceland Roadtrip

DAY 5

Day 5

Mývatn > Akureyri

Vogahraun Guesthouse is located in the Mývatn Lake area. They have different type of accommodation you can choose from. We stayed at sleeping bag accommodation (cheaper option) where they provide a room with beds, mattress and pillow but without a linen. It’s more like a dorm type, with sink in the room, communal kitchen and shared bathroom. After 2 days sleeping in cold weather, staying in a room with a cozy heater, properly cooked food and a comfy bed was enjoyable.

The day started off with a trip to Hverir, the hot mud pools just east of Lake Mývatn. The Lake Myvatn region is one of the most interesting and unusual parts of Iceland. It lies on the volcanic zone therefore the landscape are full of spluttering mudpots, weird lava formations, steaming fumaroles and volcanic craters. The whole time we were at Mývatn, we saw a lot of that. After we covered most of the must visit places in Mývatn neighborhood, we turned back onto the ring road and continued our journey west to our next stop, the beautiful Godafoss waterfall.

Goðafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods, is found just off the ring road near Akureyri. As we approaching the waterfall, we get really excited as it can be seen from the main road. We spent an hour photographing the beautiful waterfall in all different angle. Once we done, we make our way to our final stop, Akureyri where we spent the night at Akureyri Backpackers Hostel.
