DAY 3
Day 3
VÃk > Höfn
The Þakgil campsite was deep in the mountains at the base of the Myrdallsjokull ice cap, surrounded by beautiful cliffs. Woke up to this beautiful landscape, we feels like we were in paradise. Literally everywhere you look, there are breathtaking views. I must say this is the most beautiful campsite I've ever been.
We started the day off with some breakfast that we've made and continued our journey towards east of Iceland. Driving out from Þakgil was amazing. We came into the campsite in total darkness and when you get to see where you were driving the night before gave the feeling of awed. We stopped so many times along the way to take pictures and wish we have more times to explore more.
On the third day, we covered south east of the island and our first stop were the famous airplane wreckage on the black beach. To get there, I would recommend to drive with 4x4 because the black sand can be pretty soft in some places. The crashed airplane is a few miles out from the main road. The whole 20 minutes’ drive feels like we are not on the right direction as there were no sight of the airplane and we drove nearer and nearer towards the ocean. However, the wreckage were spotted not until the very last minute because it’s hidden behind a sand dune near the edge of the ocean. After taking mandatory pictures posing on top of the airplane, we make our way to Skógafoss, a 40 minutes hike to Skaftafell waterfall and drop by at Glacier Lagoon before called it a day and heading towards our next campsite at Höfn.
Höfn Campsite situated in the town of Höfn. When we arrived, it was extremely windy and we have difficulty to pitch our tent. After a lot of struggling and battling against the wind we finally had our tent up. The whole night we spent in the tent feels like the wind wanted to take our tent down and blow it out to the sea.
