Travel Journal: Iceland Roadtrip
DAY 4
Day 4
Höfn > Mývatn
Today’s drive was the longest and most challenging one. We were heading towards north east Region. Our first stop was, sailing among icebergs on an amphibian boat – my first time and I’m super excited! Glacier Lagoon offer 2 types of tour, a Boat Tour and a Zodiac Tour. The boat tour is for larger groups whilst the zodiac tour is for small groups. We have pre-booked on taking a boat tour through the lagoon, but due to strong wind, the tour company had to cancel our tour. Booooo! (We did get our money back). We than just spent about an hour wandering along the shores of the lagoon and admiring the beauty of the glacial icebergs.
After getting our fill at the lagoon, we hopped in the car and drove to Dettifoss Waterfall - the most powerful waterfall in Europe which located to the north of Iceland. Unfortunately on this journey, most of the drive was through thick fog which, also meant that we couldn’t see any of the amazing scenery around us. In places it did clear up and we were greeted to a wild landscape with black, ashy mountains, multiple lava fields and rushing creeks.
We came across the road signing its way to the waterfall and turned off the ring road onto a gravel road. We didn’t know exactly how far the waterfall would be, but it turned out to be a good 30 or so kilometres. Normally wouldn’t be an issue, but the road was more rocks than anything else, and for fear of puncturing the tyres, I try my best to avoid the pot holes and travelled at around 40km/hr (less in places). On top of that the fog was so thick, our visibility is less than 50 metres. At this point, I feel like we were driving towards a cliff and will fall into it anytime. This is definitely the scariest and nerve-wrecking drive I’ve ever experienced!
After around an hour, we pulled into the car park which is set up with a set of toilets, some information boards and we can only see 1 car there. We have a doubt whether to hike down to the waterfalls as the fog was so thick, we couldn’t see anything apart of the sound came from the waterfall (which feels like it almost next to us). About then we came across these two ladies said that it’s worth the hike down but just have to be extra careful as there were no one around. We decided to go ahead but after 10 minutes of walking, we think it’s too dangerous to proceed as the day is getting darker and we unsure which way to go. Drive the hour back out to the ring road along the dirt road was almost as nerve-wracking as it was on the way in, but we survived and heading to our stay for the night, Vogahraun sleeping bag accommodation.
